Waste of time, anyone? Step right this way and take the AIMS test. You have to pass it to graduate, but not really. We can stick all of your grades into this formula we've concocted just to make sure that you graduate and we don't get sued...again. Don't you fret: you don't even have to know anything too deep about algebra or geometry. Most of our questions are simply common sense. If you can use one iota of logic, you'll pass with flying colors. And if you can't, we'll still move you on. Don't worry at all: as long as you can pay attention to a movie for an hour and a half, you'll have just what you need to exceed our expectations. Yes, step right this way for a waste of a day!
Whelp, it's another lovely day for an AIMS testing. I am in room 204 at DVHS with Virginia Johnson (friend and math dept. chair). I produced the coffee, and she signed her life away picking up the test forms. I believe that's fair. Today is writing, and tomorrow is reading. I'll be able to post a bunch more today and tomorrow...should be worthwhile. I might even get some reading done. Work? What's that? I just have to be in the room, make sure they don't cheat, and have all the materials they need to do their best. That's it. Otherwise, I can do as I please, for the most part. I think I'll pour myself another cup o' joe. Cheers!
I had one of the classes that I thought I'd get this semester taken from me the morning of the first day back from Christmas break. I had no idea that they'd changed my schedule until that morning. Instead of having an AIMS Prep (which already replaced an Algebra 1/2 class I had last semester), 2 dropback Algebra 1's, and 2 regular Algebra 1/2's, one of those Algebra 1/2's was dispersed to the other Algebra teachers and I got a third Algebra 1 dropback class. I know I am the second lowest on the totem poll, but it sure seems like I'm taking the brunt of changes. It will take me another five years before I'll have some sort of seniority around DV, since there are a lot of veteran teachers here, and they deserve their seniority because they've earned it. So, I am not complaining that I am being treated unfairly, I am just stating that I don't like change. Maybe the Lord is trying to strengthen me through a trial of change. Truthfully, I am surprised how tired I am just five days of school back into teaching. I need to rely. The Lord is good. Yahweh-Mehsah :: The LORD my Refuge.
I don't mean to talk about my goals for life in this post. When I mention AIMS HS, I mean Arizona's Instrument for Measuring Standards for High School. Back when I was in high school, I had to take the AIMS test, but it meant nothing for me. It had no real consequence attached to it back then. Now that all of the suits have made there way through the court system and appeals have been dealt with (I'm sure more are still coming), last year's senior class was held accountable to the AIMS and had to pass it in order to graduate. I am now here at DVHS in Glendale, AZ, proctoring the new pilot AIMS writing prompts. I've read a few of them, which I am, by law, not allowed to discuss, and I actually am pleased by their simplicity as well as their ability to still give you plenty to write about. One of the responses that I read a bit of dealt with Young's Farm, which I've already mentioned on this blog once before. I've always hated the AIMS; I think it was because I had to take it for no good reason when I was in high school. At least I passed it the first time and didn't have to keep trying over and over again to do so. We'll have to see how well these students perform and if they can make the cut to graduate from our 50th ranked AZ educational system.
